How is the HPV Virus Transmitted? Human Papillomaviruses Prevention & Treatment

Non-Sexual Mode of Transmission

The mode of HPV transmission is principally through skin-to-skin or skin-to-mucosa contact. Sexual transmission is the most reported, yet investigations have described non-sexual contact transmissions. Even exchange of HPV-contaminated fomites, the touch of fingers, mouth, or skin can transmit the virus from one person to another.

Vaccination has been suggested as a preventive tool for HPV transmission protection. It is recommended in female virgins and kids with genital moles (generally safe HPV) without a personal history of sexual contact. Vertical transmission (from mother to child) is another mode of transmission. A few investigations have indicated the chance of getting the disease through the amniotic liquid or the placenta or contact maternal genital mucosa during normal birth.

Waterborne transmission of HPV has not been reported much, but HPV DNA has been identified in water bodies. Routine cleanliness measures are shown to be wasteful in preventing HPV transmission. Investigations have shown that HPV was still identified in public swimming pools after standard disinfection.

Epidemiological and clinical information support different non-sexual methods of transmission, particularly at the hour of birth and by close contact. Although the role of fomites in the transmission of HPV isn’t grounded, HPV-DNA energy has been accounted for in transvaginal ultrasound tests and colposcopes after routine sterilization.
