Ascites severity signs
Bulging flanks
Ascites is an accumulation of liquid into the abdominal cavity. This liquid is initially accumulated in the pelvic region, the area surrounding the bladder. Then, as more fluid builds up, it goes up to the flanks around the large intestine. It continues building up, and when the patient is lying on his bed, the right and left flanks start bulging to the sides. This looks and feels quite different from abdominal fat and has a wobbling quality to it.
