Hepatic encephalopathy symptoms
Cognitive problems
Hepatic encephalopathy has a wide range of neuropsychiatric symptoms with different stages according to their severity. In minimal hepatic encephalopathy, patients have mild cognitive impairments. They may have minimal memory issues or difficulty focusing on a single task. Their problems become worse as the disease continues and ammonia builds up in the blood. In more severe cases, the patient displays significant memory changes, and sometimes amnesia or total memory loss. Their memory impairments can be short-term or long-term depending on each case, and even mild cases have a repercussion on the patient’s capacity to learn or remember new things.
