Diagnosis
General tests done before confirmation include a complete blood count. The CBC will show Anemia in chronic cases due to improper nutrition and absorption, which is more significant in children. Transamnitis, which is the rise in Transaminase levels, is exhibited on performing liver function tests.
Stool (fecal) specimens are often examined to diagnose the infection under a microscope. Production of eggs typically does not start until approximately 3 to 4 months after the exposure, but antibodies to the parasite may become detectable in 2 to 4 weeks. If Fasciola eggs are found, the diagnosis is confirmed.
Certain blood tests may also aid in the diagnosis of Fasciola infection, these include IgG antibodies. Moreover, ultrasonography, CAT scan, MRI scan, ERCP may be used in more advanced cases.
