How Can One Avoid Contracting an Infection?
The methods of prevention against Fasciola are simple. Firstly, avoid taking raw or undercooked freshwater fish, and infectious parasites can be found in lightly salted, smoked, or pickled seafood.
The FDA advises the following methods for preparing or storing fish to kill parasites.
- Cooking: Cook the fish thoroughly (at least 145° F [63° C] internal temperature).
- Freezing: At -20°C or below for at least seven days total time; or at -35°C or lower until solid, then storing at -35°C or lower for at least 15 hours; or at -20°C or lower until solid, then storing at -20°C or lower for at least 24 hours.
