As noted above, liver function tests are a misnomer, and they are indirect measures of liver function. Thus, they may not always hold the final answer, but give your doctor enough information to get started with the diagnosis. It is sometimes enough to give your doctor a clear picture of what’s going on, but not always. So, if liver function tests are abnormal, it is likely that you will need additional studies in the future.
