When to look for medical help?

There are different types of abdominal pain, and you should pay attention to the one you are experiencing. It is always recommended to talk about it with your doctor, but it is not always an emergency.

If you have very severe or sudden pain, we recommend not waiting a moment and visit the emergency room as soon as possible. It is also important to distinguish between colic abdominal pain and organ-related pain. The former comes and goes, usually caused by movements in your gastrointestinal tract. The latter stays the same or almost the same for a longer time. Thus, look for medical help if you have severe pain that does not go away.

It is also recommended to look for medical help as soon as possible if you have signs and symptoms such as:

• A yellowish tone in your skin and the white portion of the eyes. This is called jaundice, and it is a sign that your liver is not working as it should.
• Fever and chills, which are clear signs of infection. Patients with abdominal pain and fever may have a gastrointestinal or liver infection.
• Nausea and vomiting, especially when accompanied by severe pain under your ribs. This is a common sign of liver problems.
