Reduced or Absent Deep-Tendon Reflexes

It is possible to assess musculoskeletal function by evaluating deep-tendon reflexes. A reduction or complete absence of deep-tendon reflexes points to a severe disturbance in muscle signaling and nerve impulse.

Reflexes do not require conscious muscle movements to provide an accurate response. They can’t be manipulated, either. They consist of a sensory impulse going into the spine, reaching a reflex circuitry, and returning as a muscle contraction. There are no brain centers involved, allowing doctors to test nerve and muscle function alterations in hypokalemia patients.
