Treatment
Treatment options for mesothelioma depend on the stage and location of the cancer, as well as the overall health of the patient. Options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy.
Unfortunately, mesothelioma is a very aggressive cancer and often has a poor prognosis, with a five-year survival rate of around 10%. However, early detection and aggressive treatment can improve outcomes for some patients.
One of the challenges in treating mesothelioma is that it is often not diagnosed until it has reached an advanced stage. This is because the symptoms can be vague and similar to those of other conditions, such as pneumonia or lung cancer.
In addition, the latency period for mesothelioma can be decades long, meaning that people who were exposed to asbestos many years ago may not develop symptoms until much later in life.
