Risk Factors
There are several risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing mesothelioma, including:
Exposure to asbestos: Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma. People who worked in industries where asbestos was commonly used, such as construction, shipbuilding, and manufacturing, are at higher risk.
Age: Most commonly diagnosed in people over the age of 65, although it can occur in younger people as well.
Gender: More common in men than women. This is due to the fact that men were more likely to work in industries where asbestos exposure was common.
Genetics: Mesothelioma is not an inherited disease. Some studies suggest that certain genetic factors may increase the risk of developing mesothelioma in people who have been exposed to asbestos.
