Signs and Symptoms
If a person comes in contact with the Molluscum contagiosum virus, it is possible not to experience any symptoms for the first six months. This virus takes about 2 to 7 weeks to show its effect. You may encounter the appearance of small bumps called lesions that might appear alone or in groups of around 20. In appearance, these bumps show the following characteristics:
- They are Firm & Round like a dome.
- Mollusca size range from 2-5 millimeter or 1/4 inches in diameter. That is equal to a pin’s head to as large as a pencil back eraser.
- Raised/swollen /inflamed
- Their color is like Flesh, giving a whitish and pinkish appearance.
- Pit/ dent /dimple in center
- Center filled with waxy cheese-like material.
- Shiny, smooth & pearly in appearance
- Have a small umbilication or dot at the top near the center
- They might be itchy, become red and inflamed.
- Lesions appear on the face, neck, armpits, arms, and tops of the hands in children.
- If the infection is transmitted sexually might be seen on the genitals (penis, vagina, vulva, anus), lower abdomen, and inner upper thighs in adults.
If you are a patient with cancer, hepatitis, and herpes or have undergone an organ transplant, the virus might affect you differently and show specified symptoms. This is also applicable for patients with HIV. For such cases, the size of the virus could be as large as 15mm in diameter, which is as big as a lime. The lesions appear more often on the face, especially in HIV, and cannot be treated with general Molluscum contagiosum virus treatment. For such cases, specified treatment is taken in which medication targets strengthening the immune system to fight the virus.
