Conjunctivitis

Mucosal inflammation in monkeypox may also feature conjunctivitis. This is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the mucosa that covers and protects the eyes. This is not the most common symptom, and only 20% of patients have this problem, manifested as redness of the eyes, usually accompanied by itching or pain. When monkeypox takes the conjunctiva layer of the eyes, there’s a chance it will also take the cornea, which is a transparent structure that we need intact for visual acuity. Thus, patients with monkeypox and visual health alterations should receive proper care to prevent corneal scarring, a complication that may lead to long-lasting visual damage.
