Outcome of portal hypertension
Portal hypertension is a serious condition that can be life-threatening at any time. Complications ranging form severe bleeding and vomiting as well as ascites and renal failure are the usual causes of death. Under proper medical treatment and prompt preparation for liver transplantation, patients with portal hypertension can lead normal lives.
If the cause of portal hypertension is liver cirrhosis, then the main concern becomes liver failure and liver cancer, which become the main causes of death in such cases. Liver failure can be managed using liver transplantation, and liver cancer has many modalities of treatment.
Either way, a patient with portal hypertension without liver transplantation has a serious risk of disease progression and death even under optimal medical treatment.
Your doctor will discuss your various options during your visit and you can voice your concerns regarding your condition and treatment options with them.
