Signs and symptoms

Patients who contract Schistosomiasis from infested water usually present symptoms 4-8 weeks after the infection. For some variants of Schistosome, the presentation of symptoms occurs after 2-8 weeks. The most common symptoms observed are fever, lethargy, and malaise. Body pains, especially in the muscles, are also commonly observed. Some less common symptoms are loss of appetite, bloody diarrhea, headache, cough, and pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. Patients who suffer from complications of this disease may get a pruritic rash, eosinophilia, and lymphadenopathy.
Patients who suffer from chronic infestation usually show some more symptoms, including those in the case of an acute infestation. Absence of urination, frequent urination, or terminal hematuria are observed in patients who have an infection in the urinary tract. Seizures, neuralgia, pain in the upper and lower back, headache, and lower limb weakness are symptoms related to the Central Nervous System. Female-specific symptoms include genital rashes, postcoital bleeding, irregular menstruation, and lower abdomen pain.
