Diagnosis and treatment of the disease
The symptoms of Schistosomiasis are very much similar to the presentations of other clinical diseases, so a differential diagnosis is very peculiar for this disease. The symptoms should not be confused with other organ-specific or organ system-specific diseases. A complete Blood Count and Liver Enzymes test should be conducted along with the Renal Function test and Blood cultures. Urinary and Fecal microbiological tests are the key to figuring out any infestation in the body. PCR is the most accurate way of diagnosing this disease because the method is accurate up to 99.9% times.
The disease is treated using corticosteroids, mainly prednisolone 50 mg, for five days. This is to ameliorate the inflammatory condition in the body. The treatment prognosisrelies on the decreasing number of eggs that are excreted from the body from time to time. So the eggs released should be checked every 5-10 days. The remaining medications depend on the management of the patient’s symptoms and also on the use of praziquantel.
