Dull Abdominal Pain in the Lower Back
As we mentioned previously, pain in bladder cancer is not the most common symptom, and the majority of new diagnoses are made in painless patients with hematuria. However, during the course of the disease, and when the tumor has already grown, it is possible to experience two distinct types of pain: lower back pain (often flank pain) or abdominal pain (typically located in the pelvic cavity).
Flank pain typically results from obstruction of one of the ureters that transport urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder. If the tumor is obstructing the passage of urine, it will flow backward and start accumulating in the kidney, so the organ begins to swell.
Abdominal pain in the pelvic cavity results from the compression of pelvic organs, and it only appears in cases of advanced cancer with accelerated growth.
