Is Bell’s Palsy Contagious?

This is a very weird question that has been in the minds of the general public too often and the answer is no. Bell’s palsy is not a viral or bacterial disease. It develops because of the neuronal discharge or obstruction that makes the facial muscles weak and causes involuntary movements of the face.

The condition itself is not contagious but if Bell’s palsy is caused by an underlying disease condition such as Herpes Simplex Type 1 infection (HSV-1), then the viral disease can be contagious. Researchers have found that more than 50% of patients of Herpes Simplex usually suffer from Bell’s palsy at some time during the course of the disease. Other viral diseases like Epstein Barr virus, Varicella Zoster virus, adenovirus, and cytomegalovirus also cause bell’s palsy and all these viral diseases are highly contagious.
