Diagnosis of Bell’s palsy

Bell’s palsy can easily be diagnosed by looking at the symptoms and its differential diagnosis is not hard at all. Although the diagnosis is pretty much easy and clear, your doctor might also run a few diagnostic tests just to rule out other possibilities.

The main confusion that can occur with the diagnosis of Bell’s palsy is stroke so running a CT scan of the brain and the head is effective. The extent of nerve damage is also estimated from the scans.

The usual procedure for diagnosis is Electromyography (EMG), CT Scan, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Besides radiography, a few blood tests are also conducted to confirm the absence of other diseases like diabetes and Lyme disease. Besides, a stroke, a tumor pressing a nerve is also a possibility so all these tests are necessary before treating the patient for Bell’s palsy only.
