Phytonutrients in Chia Seeds

Phytonutrients in Chia Seeds

Besides the macronutrients and micronutrients described above, chia seeds also contain something known as phytonutrients. These substances are substances made by plants to protect themselves against different harms. They are the immune system of plants, and many of these phytonutrients are active in the human body, too. They usually have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential. Some are potent antibacterial substances, and others block unnatural processes in cells, slowing the growth of malignant tumors.

One of the essential phytonutrients in chia seeds is known as kaempferol. This is a flavonol with anti-cancer properties. It is active against breast cancer, colon cancer, liver cancer, and more. Another phytonutrient is quercetin, which is also a potent antioxidant. By protecting the organism against free radicals, we are guarded against premature aging and chronic disease.
