Treatment of Cirrhosis
Different treatments can be adopted in liver cirrhosis to reduce the impacts of the symptoms on the patient’s quality of life. Depending on the type of cirrhosis and its manifestations, patients may need to receive:
- Antiviral agents and interferon for certain types of hepatitis
- Prednisone and other immunosuppressants in autoimmune hepatitis
- Ursodeoxycholic acid in cases of primary biliary cholangitis
- Phlebotomy in patients with hemochromatosis
- Zinc and trientine in patients with Wilson disease
This condition is variable and very intricate. Treatment depends on the cause of cirrhosis and the patient’s risk factors. It also depends on additional problems caused by cirrhosis, such as pruritus and zinc deficiency.
Liver transplantation is another critical strategy, but it is reserved for patients with severe symptoms of decompensated cirrhosis. Contraindications include active alcohol or drug use, severe cardiopulmonary disease, sepsis, and other complex medical issues.
