Recommendations
Throughout the course of hepatitis, patients typically experience a reduction or loss of appetite. This is sometimes a problem when patients reduce their intake and suffer malnutrition. Thus, it is sometimes recommended for patients and their families use powdered nutritional supplements and liquids to enrich their diet.
There is a high risk of protein-calorie malnutrition in particular cases, especially in alcoholic liver disease. Thus, the American College of Gastroenterology, along with the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, recommends multiple feedings with a particular treatment to correct this problem.
In these patients, physical activity should also be recommended, usually in the form of walking or swimming. This reduces the risk of muscle wasting and cuts the loop of inactivity and lean mass reduction. In some cases, patients with muscle weakness benefit from physical therapy to preserve their muscle mass.
