Dysentery; Causes, Symptoms, & Prevention

Dysentery symptoms

Symptoms can take up to three days to weeks to show up after your body has been infected with the bacteria or parasite respectively. Symptoms of both Shigella dysentery and Amoebic dysentery are similar. However, symptoms may differ for different people and not all people will have all the symptoms. Some people may show no symptoms at all.

Common symptoms of dysentery include:

  • High temperature with chills
  • Abdominal discomfort, including stomach cramps or pain
  • Diarrhea with blood in stool
  • Mucoid stools (stools containing mucus)
  • Rectal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Alternating periods of constipation and diarrhea
