Leg and abdominal swelling
Our liver produces a protein called albumin which is crucial to maintaining fluid inside our blood vessels. If the liver is diseased, the level of this protein falls, causing an escape of fluid into the skin, causing swelling of the legs, or into the abdominal cavity, causing abdominal distension. This can lead to infection and severe kidney problems, and is a symptom of advanced liver disease. Any persistent leg swelling should prompt you to visit your doctor.
