Low ferritin in itself is unlikely to cause complications, but iron deficiency anemia can cause various complications including:

  • Delayed growth in children
  • Lack of concentration and memory of affection
  • Heart failure
  • Menstrual irregularity and infertility
  • Depression
  • Weakened immunity and increased risk of infections
  • Pregnancy complications especially decreased weight of the newborn and worsening of the anemia following delivery.
