Complications of high ferritin
Ferritin is an indicator of iron status, and when the iron is elevated in the blood, it tends to deposit in various tissues causing:
- Heart failure
- Liver cirrhosis and failure in the long term
- Diabetes mellitus, owing to its deposition in the pancreas
- Gonadal failure, loss of libido, menstrual irregularities, and failure of achieving puberty in children
- Hypothyroidism is due to the deposition in the thyroid gland
- Joint pain and limited mobility
Some of the above complications can be reversible if iron overload is treated promptly and normal organ function can be restored. Delaying treatment can cause permanent damage.
