Giardia is not the only parasite affecting the intestines, nor is it the only cause of diarrhea in humans, and differentiating the different causes of diarrhea is essential to proper treatment. The main causes of diarrhea include:

1) Infections

whether viral, bacterial, parasitic, or protozoal. Bacterial gastroenteritis manifests with more severe symptoms than giardiasis and patients usually develop high fever and even blood in their stools. Bacterial infections tend to occur after eating unclean food and is rarely infectious to other family members, while viral diarrhea is much more common and can easily be transmitted especially among children and infants.
