High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sweetener used in many processed foods and beverages. HFCS has been shown to increase uric acid levels and contribute to gout. A study published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism found that men who consumed the most HFCS had a 77% higher risk of developing gout than those who consumed the least.
