A review study published in Cochrane in 2012 evaluated results from 9 studies and 732,380 participants. It went through the methodology and any possible bias to verify the data’s accuracy and reported that pre-exposure vaccination with hepatitis A is effective to prevent this condition. Live attenuated vaccine and inactivated vaccine are effective in preventing hepatitis A, reducing the incidence of acute infection 10 times compared to the placebo group.

Most infections in the treatment group took place during the first year. Thus, it may take longer to fully develop immunity in some individuals. However, it does provide long-term protection, and it is a cost-effective solution to prevent an outbreak of hepatitis A. Still, it is routinely used in some places, and global immunization can be very expensive. The vaccine is only licensed to be used in 2-year-old children and older.
