What are the typical signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome?

The first signs of IBS include abdominal pain and muscle cramping. Disturbed bowel movements along with abdominal pain are the key features to diagnose irritable bowel syndrome. These are quickly followed by alternate diarrhea or constipation. Both constipation and diarrhea may coexist. Some other common signs include;
- Cramping pain after eating certain foods.
- Pain relief after passing a bowel movement.
- Loss of appetite.
- Nausea.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Dehydration.
- Mucousy or foamy stool.
- Abdominal swelling or bloating.
