What causes irritable bowel syndrome to flare up?
Irritable bowel syndrome can be triggered by:
Hormones – Hormonal changes may play a role in IBS as women are more prone to have IBS compared to men. It commonly affects women above 45 years of age i.e., after their menopause. Another relationship is that the signs and symptoms of IBS usually get worse during or around their menstrual periods.
Food – Whether food intolerance or allergy causes IBS is not fully understood yet. A number of studies, however, show that many people have exaggerated IBS symptoms when they eat certain foods like dairy products, citrus fruits, cereal and carbonated drinks.
Stress – Stress is an important triggering factor of IBS. Increased stress due to any physiological or emotional cause can aggravate IBS symptoms.
