Isoniazid (Tuberculosis) & Isoniazid Side Effects

A review of its adverse effects and drug toxicity

No drug comes without its side effects. Isoniazid kills the Mycobacterium, but the patient taking it requires very vigilant health care so that the treatment is effectively endured. A few common symptoms observed in Isoniazid patients include sudden feelings of illness, weakness, fever for three days or more, body pains, nausea and loss of appetite, pale skin, and easy injuries.

A few symptoms are also related to the nervous system. The patient might feel numb and dizzy at times. Vertigo, seizures, confusion, memory loss, and unusual thoughts are also reported. Pain in the eyes, blurred vision, dark urine, clay-colored stools, and jaundice-like symptoms are also commonly observed as adverse effects of Isoniazid.

There is a chance of drug toxicity since the clearance and elimination of the drug vary in different individuals.

The lethal dose of Isoniazid is 100mg/kg, so the dose of the drug should not exceed the therapeutic window. The symptoms of toxicity are liver function abnormalities, skin rashes, drug-induced hepatitis, peripheral neuropathy, and other central nervous system issues.
