What is the Keto Diet?

The keto diet is short of the ketogenic diet. It falls in the category of very low carbohydrate diets because it consists of minimizing carb intake to the bare minimum. It is based on the fact that your body prefers carbohydrates to create fuel but has an alternate metabolic system to burn fat when no carbohydrates are available in your diet. So, when your carbohydrate intake drops to near zero, the organism triggers something called ketosis. It is basically burning fats instead of carbs.

Ketosis is a metabolic process in which the enzymes in your organism are prepared to create a molecule known as ATP based on fatty acids. This is basically energy, which makes changes in the body, fueling muscle and other tissues. The Keto diet stimulates your body to enter ketosis through your dietary choices, and you go through a period of adaptation in which the organism changes its metabolic preferences.

Keto and ketosis have this name after the word ketones or ketone bodies. They are intermediate substances that replace carbohydrates in your body and fill your blood instead of sugar. Thus, you can measure your blood ketone bodies to check if you actually entered ketosis. Fatty acids turn into ketone bodies. Ketone bodies travel through the arteries and veins, fueling the body. After entering the cells, they are transformed into energy.

Next, let’s see the types of foods you can eat on a keto diet.
