Types of Knee Replacement Surgery
There are two types of knee replacement surgery. They are called total knee replacement (TKR) and partial knee replacement (PKR). The procedure for TKR involves replacing the entire knee joint with a prosthetic one. This involves removing the damaged knee bone and replacing it with a metal implant. The procedure for PKR involves removing only part of the damaged knee joint and replacing it with a prosthetic one.
But let’s take a closer look at each one:
- Partial knee replacement surgery: Partial knee replacement surgery is the most common type of knee replacement surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon will remove the damaged parts of the knee and replace them with a new artificial knee. The new knee is made of metal or plastic. The surgeon may also remove a part of the bone in order to make room for the new knee.
- Total knee replacement surgery: Total knee replacement surgery is performed to replace the entire knee joint. This surgery is much more complicated than partial knee replacement surgery. The surgeon will remove the damaged parts of the knee and replace them with a new artificial knee. In addition, the surgeon will remove the damaged parts of the bone to make room for the new knee.
