Myth 4. Carbs and salt are liver toxins
You can be worried about what is healthy and what is not, but we should get the concept of toxins straight. Toxins are substances that cause direct damage to tissues and organs. In high concentrations, toxins can be poisonous and instantly kill you. Your body doesn’t use toxins and doesn’t need them to function correctly.
Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy in the body. Salt is composed of sodium, a micronutrient that runs in your veins and is required for cellular balance. An excess of carbs and sodium can be detrimental to your health, but that doesn’t turn them into toxins. Even saturated fat can be useful in a minimal amount, so it is not technically a toxin. We need to stop calling them toxins, even if they are related to obesity, hypertension, and fatty liver when consumed excessively.
