All You Need to Know about Liver Function Tests

Preparing for liver function tests

Preparation for a liver function test is usually not difficult, and your doctor will give you all of the advice you need in case he asks for a particular exam. However, in most cases, it is enough with a blood sample.

You need to know that some foods and medications change the circulating levels of proteins and enzymes in the blood. For example, you may have a lower protein count in the blood if you’re not consuming enough proteins. You may also want to avoid some medications as specified by your doctor. So, if you’re under medications for any chronic or acute condition, be sure to ask your doctor if it’s ok to continue using them before the exam.

It is essential to drink enough water in order to be adequately hydrated for your test. You may or may not be asked to avoid eating for a period before the exam.
