Common Skin Spots, Pictures, Causes & Treatment: Liver Spots

Is the Liver Involved, & Why Are They Called That?

Spider angiomas
Spider angiomas

As you can see after listing the causes of the so-called liver spots, hepatic problems are not a likely cause. The liver is not involved in age spots. Instead, the reason is usually related to sun exposure, an overgrowth of blood vessels in the area, or a genetic predisposition.

People historically called them liver spots because they mistook them for other skin manifestations of liver disease. However, cutaneous pigmentation changes in liver disease are usually caused by an accumulation of bilirubin in the skin, which causes a yellowish coloration. In primary biliary cirrhosis, users could also increase the rate of melanin production. However, this pigment change is found widely dispersed in the dermis and epidermis, all over the body, and not in the form of age spots.

Other skin manifestations of liver disease include palmar erythema and spider angiomas. They are not the most common manifestation and look radically different from what we know as liver spots.
