4) Fever

This is perhaps one of the most critical symptoms of malaria. This is a parasitic infection of the blood, and the microorganisms are transported to all parts of the body, including the brain. There are also toxic substances released by breaking red blood cells, stimulating inflammation, and triggering brain centers that increase body temperature.

Plasmodium species infect red blood cells and stay inside a particular time until the red blood cell breaks. Then, the process starts once again. That is why fever has a cyclic nature in most cases of malaria, which is described below in the section “paroxysms.”
