Lifestyle changes
- Reduce standing for a long period and change positions at the interval
- Weight loss to maintain a good weight as obesity is a risk factor
- Exercise as prescribed by your physical therapist to improve circulation (2).
Medical treatment
Although varicose veins have no definitive treatment, the following measures will help prevent progression and complications
- Medications: medications are given to relieve pain and associated swelling. Acetaminophen may be prescribed by your physicians
- Elevation: to increase and improve the flow of blood, your physician will advise that you elevate the limbs, especially when lying down to prevent the backflow of blood (3).
- Compression stockings: Your doctor could suggest wearing certain compression stockings or socks. These exert enough pressure on your legs to facilitate easier blood flow to your heart. They lessen edema as well. Although the degree of compression varies, the majority of compression stockings may be found at pharmacies or medical supply shops (2).
