How is Trigger Finger Diagnosed?

When you visit your doctor, they will ask you a few questions regarding your condition and how long you have been having it. Afterwards, they will examine your hand and check for any signs of other diseases along with trigger finger. They may then ask for a number of investigations including:

  • Investigations for rheumatoid arthritis: They include rheumatoid factor, anti CCP antibodies, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C reactive protein (CRP). Rheumatoid arthritis should be excluded before making sure that it is a primary trigger finger.
  • Routine investigations including a complete blood count and blood glucose. If you have other symptoms, your doctor may order some investigations to exclude other diseases.

Lab investigations are not always needed and a clinical diagnosis is enough in most cases. No imaging studies is needed unless there is a history of trauma which preceded the condition to exclude any injury to the tendons or bones.
